The inscription on this gravestone reads, "Charles Lawrence and family. Died Oct. 8, 1871. All perished in the Peshtigo Fire." The accounting of the known dead in an 1873 report to the Wisconsin Legislature lists "Lawerence, Charles, wife and four children; fled from lower sugar bush to village, and were all burned near the river." This stone, and others like it, can be found in the Peshtigo Fire Cemetery. (Some fire victims' graves were moved to the Riverside Cemetery. An additional 250 victims are buried in the Harmony Cemetery.) |
